December Chesapeake Rockfish Report VIDEO

I trolled up a new personal best on the Good Samaritan - 43" length, 25" girth, and 30lbs. I was trolling out front of the radar towers on the western edge of the shipping channel in 50 feet of water, right on the bend and up on the ledge.

Chesapeake Bay Tidal Fishing Report - August 2, 2010

A new Chesapeake Bay tidal fishing report just came in from Striper Dave. He reports on monster red drum in the Potomac River area, spotty spanish mackerel, breaking blues and stripers, and nice spot and croaker showing up in numbers now.

First Reports of Breaking Bluefish

We got the first report of breaking bluefish from Buzz's Marina in Ridge, MD. Not many more details than that at this point, but here's a nice photo of angler Chuck Diamond with the first bluefish to come into the marina for 2010!

New Fishing Jetty Slated for Sandy Point

This is great news for the Maryland shorebound tidal angler! The Baltimore Sun is reporting today that the O'Malley administration has set aside $550,000 to rebuild the stone jetty north of the Bay Bridge.

Maryland Tidal Fishing Report - May 25, 2010

Here is the latest fishing report for Maryland's tidal waters including the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic beaches.  It looks like the striper bite is shifting away from the trophy fish to the resident fish, white perch and croaker action is starting to heat up as is flounder fishing, and the beaches are seeing a nice run of stripers.  This report was put together and filed by Dave Yost, aka Striper Dave.

MD DNR Asks Anglers To Catch And Kill Snakehead Fish

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds anglers that they are required by regulation to kill Northern Snakehead fish, if caught and kept. Snakehead fish, an invasive species, have started to thrive in the Potomac River and its tributaries.

New MD Law Requires Children Under 13 To Wear PFD

Governor Martin O'Malley today signed a bill into law to strengthen protection of children on Maryland waterways. Under the new law, effective immediately, any child under the age of 13 is required to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) while aboard a vessel that is underway.

Hutchins Pond, Calvert County Fishing Report

I have heard many people say this pond is good only for the regular spring/fall trout stocking that MD DNR does here every year.  They say that the only time to fish here is the 2 to 3 week period following that stocking. I am here to tell you they are wrong.

First Maryland Shad of 2010

I just got this quick fishing report in from Dave Yost, aka Striper Dave ( http://www.striperdave.com ).  Looks like he found some shad willing to take a bait.

I caught this nice shad today on the Anacostia River near Bladensburg Park.  I also managed to snag one herring, but lost him at the shoreline.

Young Angler Catches State Record Fish

Three and a half year old sets Maryland state record while fishing with his dad at a favorite farm pond while casting a small chartreuse grub lure with his ultra-light spinning outfit. His catch was a 1lb, 8oz rock bass that measured 12 inches long.

Susquehanna Flats Striped Bass Catch and Release Season

The special catch and release striped bass fishing season on the Susquehanna Flats, which opened on March 1 and runs through May 3, is picking up as the water warms and the native stripers return for the spawning season. Reports from the Flats indicate that the action is best in the channels leading to Havre de Grace and North East, Md.

2nd Annual Rockfish Shootout Tournament

The 2nd Annual Rockfish Shootout at Coltons Point Marina will be held May 15-16th, 2010. We are limiting the registration this year to 75 boats – so get in quickly before registration is full. The registration fee is $225 per boat ($250 after April 9th) and the tournament is for amateur fisherman only. The net proceeds go to benefit the Seventh District Optimist Club, a Non-Profit organization that provides services and assistance to children in St. Mary's County.

MD DNR Submits 2010 Flounder Regulations

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service has submitted 2010 recreational summer flounder regulations to the General Assembly for approval. The proposal limits coastal and Bay anglers to a three fish creel with a 19-inch minimum size from April 17 through November 22.

New Pre-Season Striped Bass Catch & Release Rules Begin on March 22

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service will implement new regulations March 22 addressing pre-season striped bass fishing. These restrictions will be in effect until the April 17 start of the spring trophy season.

Crayfish Ban In Effect For Middle and Upper Potomac and Susquehanna River Basins

New permanent regulations pertaining to the catch, possession and use as bait of crayfish became effective October 2009. The regulations apply to Middle Potomac River, Upper Potomac River and Susquehanna River Basins. In these basins, anglers may not catch, use or possess any species of crayfish unless the head is removed immediately upon capture. Also, anglers may not catch and possess any female crayfish bearing eggs. Eggs on the female are found attached to the underside of the abdomen. These must be immediately returned to the water where they were caught.

8 Rock Hall Men Charged With Serious Striped Bass Violations

Eight Rock Hall men that were arrested last week for rockfish poaching are the first suspects to face a new, tiered penalty system, which imposes penalties on both first time offenders and repeat offenders, based on the severity of their crime. Two of the eight men—William Howard Beck, 43, and John Franklin Riggs, 43—were charged with oyster poaching by the Natural Resource Police (NRP) in December, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) subsequently suspended Beck’s rights to catch oysters for the season due to repeat offenses.

MD DNR Launches Largemouth Bass Choptank River Initiative

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Inland Fisheries Division has assembled a team of engineers, biologists and anglers to develop a largemouth bass improvement strategy for the Choptank River, which has seen a decline in black bass reproduction in recent years.

New Boat Ramp Coming to Potomac River in Charles County

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has awarded a grant to Charles County to construct a new boat ramp facility in Mallows Bay on the Potomac River. Anglers will experience immediate access to some of southern Maryland’s best tidal fishing.  Additionally, Mallows Bay contains the historically significant “ghost ships,” including World War I era wooden vessels.
